Mark E. Peterson

Dr. Mark E. Peterson was awarded a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with High Distinction from the University of Minnesota in 1976. After moving to New York City, Mark first completed an internship and medical residency at The Animal Medical Center. He then finished a post-doctoral fellowship in endocrinology and nuclear medicine at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Mark obtained board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1981.


Dr. Peterson served as Head of the Division of Endocrinology in the Department of Medicine at The Animal Medical Center for over 30 years. In addition, Mark has held faculty appointments as Professor of Medicine at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (1996-2000), Associate Professor of Radiology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University (1983-2005), and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University (1982-1988). He currently serves as adjunct Professor of Medicine at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University.


In 2009, Mark opened the Animal Endocrine Clinic, a specialty referral hospital devoted exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of dogs and cats with endocrine disease, where he now cares for most of his endocrine patients and conducts clinic research.


Over the last 35-plus years, most of Dr. Peterson's clinical and research efforts has been directed toward advancing our understanding of naturally-occurring endocrine disorders of the dog and cat, especially hyper- and hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, calcium disorders, and adrenal disease. He has published more than 500 journal articles, book chapters, and research abstracts. With more than 500 lecture presentations to his credit, Dr. Peterson is a frequent speaker at veterinary colleges and scientific seminars both in both the United States and abroad.
